Packaging hierarchy

1 minute

The Packaging hierarchy defines the structural arrangement of packaging layers for a product, from direct wrapping to transit packaging. This classification is essential for effective data management, particularly in our PIM system.

Definition of packaging hierarchy

The Packaging hierarchy is a standardized model for categorizing the various packaging stages that a product passes through during the entire logistics and distribution process. It is used to clearly identify and manage packaging information.

Levels of the packaging hierarchy

Image in PIM system

  • Primary packaging: The direct packaging of the product, customer-oriented. In PIM system linked to product SKU and visual assets.
  • Secondary packaging Comprises several primary packaging items, often for marketing and logistics purposes (e.g. collective carton). Relevant in the PIM system for bundles and sales packaging.
  • Tertiary packaging The transport packaging (e.g., pallet, shipping carton) protects the goods during storage and shipping. Stored in the PIM system for logistics data and dimensions.

Importance for product data management

A precise representation of the Packaging hierarchy in our PIM system optimizes data quality, simplifies product presentation and enables efficient logistics processes. It ensures that all relevant packaging attributes are managed and communicated correctly.
