A POI is a Point Of Interest. That is, a highlighted geographical location of public interest, such as supermarkets, companies, or other businesses.

This is familiar from map services, and it's meant to be explained here to an interested layperson. Google and other map services like HERE or Apple Maps identify places of public interest as so-called POIs.
This is often shown on the map as a pin symbol or as a descriptive element. Typical POIs are:
- Restaurants
- Museums
- Public facilities such as offices, city halls, licensing offices, etc.
- Football stadiums
- Companies
- Supermarkets, shops, stores, gyms
- etc.
